Heating sector in Central Asia urgently needs radical reorganization - WB

The World Bank has published a new report, “Developing and Implementing a Framework for the Transition to Sustainable Heating.” It presents the results of an analysis of this area in 23 countries of Europe and Central Asia (ECA), the bank’s press service reported.
The World Bank's report calls for a major modernization of the regional heating sector to ensure the delivery of sustainable and affordable services to the population, especially the most vulnerable citizens, and to reduce dependence on inefficient, carbon-intensive fuels.

The report highlights the need to improve the efficiency, sustainability and affordability of heating services for all. To achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century, the ECA region needs a radical transformation of the heating sector, which today accounts for about 24% of regional energy consumption, as well as about 22% of greenhouse gas emissions.

“Countries in the Europe and Central Asia region must not delay the transition to sustainable heating,” said Antonella Bassani, World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia. “By adopting appropriate economic policies and government programs that provide targeted subsidies for the development and implementation of cleaner and more efficient heating technologies, countries can reduce heating demand, improve air quality and reduce emissions as early as this decade.”
