ADB to Provide $125 Million for Digitalization of Uzbekistan`s Water Sector

The project aims to introduce smart asset management, which will lead to reduced energy consumption, optimized water use and digitalization of the sector.

The Asian Development Bank has approved a $125 million loan to support the Government of Uzbekistan in its efforts to modernize the water resources management sector, improve water security and increase access to safe and reliable water supply in the country. This was reported to UzNews.uz by the bank's representative office.

The project to improve smart water management taking into account climate change will improve asset management and the sustainability of service delivery, as well as strengthen the institutional capacity of the national water supply company. It will also lead to more effective decision-making and increased efficiency in water management and energy use, thereby contributing to climate change mitigation.

“Uzbekistan's water resources are under serious threat due to climate change and inefficient use. The ADB project will introduce smart water management systems to improve water use, reduce energy consumption, and enhance operational efficiency to reduce Uzbekistan’s carbon footprint,” said Kanokpan Lao-Araya, ADB Country Director for Uzbekistan.

Uzsuvtaminot and its regional branches will be supported to complete the ongoing installation of water metering and telemetry systems at key water-using facilities across the country. The project will also conduct an asset inventory and prepare on-site geographic mapping for all existing water supply and sanitation infrastructure, including about 4 million customer connections.

In addition, an integrated suite of IT-based climate-smart utility management systems will be launched, including related training for staff of national water utilities. The project will also improve the operations of client centers by providing new financial management software, leading to transparent financial reporting based on international standards.

This project will facilitate the implementation of transformative digital solutions and technologies to reduce operating costs, increase workforce efficiency, and improve customer engagement and satisfaction.
