The World Bank has allocated a grant to Uzbekistan to create a mechanism for eliminating gas leaks
The World Bank has approved a grant of $10.6 million to Uzbekistan, the funds will be used to reduce leaks in worn-out gas transportation infrastructure and preserve natural gas to supply households and industrial enterprises in the country. About thisreportsWB press service.
As noted, the implementation of these measures will help strengthen energy security, increase government revenues and create additional jobs.
Uzbekistan`s gas transportation infrastructure has deteriorated over time due to insufficient investment in maintenance and repair, leading to gas leaks and financial losses. Without the necessary work, cumulative losses by 2030 could reach 1.75 billion cubic meters of gas, which is equivalent to $228 million in lost revenues, the report says.
WB Regional Director for Central Asia Naji Benhasin emphasized that increasing the efficiency of the gas transportation system will reduce gas losses and thereby provide more domestically produced and affordable energy for the population and business of Uzbekistan. Reducing gas leaks in networks will provide additional resource savings and significant economic benefits.
The project “Creating a mechanism for eliminating gas leaks in Uzbekistan” will help in establishing processes for identifying and eliminating the majority of leaks in gas transmission networks managed by the state company Uztransgaz.
By 2029, thanks to repair work, it is planned to annually prevent the leakage of about 47.5 thousand metric tons of gas, which will be supplied to consumers and business entities. Reduced gas losses will also provide financial savings of approximately $18 million.
A significant portion of these funds will be used to implement long-term measures to detect and eliminate leaks. They will ensure the efficient and reliable functioning of the Uztransgaz gas transportation system.
